Jonathan Blaufarb is the Senior Partner of Counsel LLP. His law practice includes advising major recording and performing artists and celebrities, songwriters, producers, record labels, digital music and technology companies, concert promoters, gaming companies, mobile firms, merchandising companies, film and television talent, and authors.
Jon was formerly the Managing Partner of the San Francisco office of Davis Shapiro Lewit & Hayes, LLP, a national music law firm with other offices in New York and Beverly Hills. Before that he was a partner in the Beverly Hills entertainment law firm of Bloom, Hergott, Diemer & Cook. His background also includes complex business and entertainment litigation with Rogers & Wells and Wyman, Bautzer, as well as music transactions as in-house counsel for Sony Music, personal management of recording artists, record retail operations, and performing and recording as a professional musician.
David Kostiner is the Managing Partner of Counsel LLP. His practice includes the representation of creators and innovators in the entertainment and technology industries with respect to all aspects of their businesses. David specializes in music, film and start-up strategies, rights transactions, corporate formation and maintenance, trademarking and litigation services. David was formerly an associate in the San Francisco office of Davis Shapiro Lewit and Hayes, LLP after beginning his career as a percussionist drumming in jazz clubs and appearing in the Tanglewood, New England and Interlochen Symphony Orchestras. He later joined Dreamworks artist Creeper Lagoon and toured and recorded with countless independent and major label artists.
Following his performing career and during law school, David co-founded the Independent Online Distribution Alliance (later sold to Sony Music) was the sponsorship director for the Noise Pop Music Festival and managed the internationally acclaimed artist Rogue Wave. David currently serves as an Adjunct Professor of Entertainment Law at the University of California Hastings College of Law and frequently appears as a panelist and public speaker. David has been published by the Hastings Communications and Entertainment Law Journal and the Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal. David's education includes a J.D. from the UC Hastings College of Law, a B.A. in Psychology from Tufts University and studies at the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston University's Tanglewood Institute and the Interlochen Arts Academy.
Vivek Sridharan is a Partner at Counsel LLP and has been with the firm since its inception in 2007. His primary practice includes representation of artists, bands, content creators and licensors in transactions, litigation, and with respect to their corporate needs.
Prior to joining Counsel LLP, Vivek was one of the first employees at IODA, working as a Content Acquisition Manager and Financial Analyst for the then start-up as it grew from a handful of unpaid employees to a stalwart in the digital music industry, later being acquired by Sony Music. Following his time at IODA, Vivek studied law at Santa Clara University. During this time he worked as a Law Clerk at multiple entertainment law firms and started his own business, providing consultation and advice on digital strategy for independent record labels, music technology start-ups, and recording artists. He also served as a Fellow at the Panetta Institute for Public Policy, working directly with Leon and Sylvia Panetta prior to Mr. Panetta resuming his political career under the Obama administration.
Vivek has always loved music and has worked as a hip hop DJ for various venues and radio stations. He also performs regularly on various Indian percussion instruments.
Shawn Burgess Thompson
Shawn Burgess Thompson is an Associate Attorney at Counsel LLP. Her primary practice includes entertainment and intellectual property contract drafting and review, complex litigation and dispute resolution, trademark registration and corporate formation. Prior to joining Counsel LLP as an attorney Shawn had served as the firm's law clerk since the Spring of 2011.
Shawn completed her undergraduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and studied law at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. She was an active member of Hastings’ Association of Communications, Sports, and Entertainment Law, and has previously served as a legal intern for both the Independent Online Distribution Alliance (IODA) and Reprise Records. In her spare time, Shawn enjoys singing karaoke and seeing live music.
Monica Zhang is an Associate Attorney at Counsel LLP, where her practice focuses on the representation of diverse artists and songwriters in the drafting and negotiating of music publishing, recording, and licensing agreements, in addition to intellectual property protection.
She holds a CIPP/US certification for US Privacy law and is admitted to practice law in California. Previously, she has interned at digital distribution and licensing startup, Loudr. Monica obtained her J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where she was Executive Articles Editor at the Communications and Entertainment Law Journal. She completed her undergraduate studies in International Relations and Chinese at the University of California, Davis.
In her free time, Monica enjoys learning how to cook, live music, volunteering, and the company of her chubby cat, Teddy.
Jessica Sanders is the Office Manager at Counsel LLP. She is responsible for all office systems and procedures. Her organizational skills ensure exacting operation and seamless communication between the Counsel legal team and its clients.
She spent the last several years serving as Office Manager and Events Coordinator in the restaurant industry. Along with her strong customer service record, Jessica has developed and implemented service systems at new and existing restaurants. She has served as creative liaison and developer for digital media and web design and managed social media and marketing campaigns. She has also served as an aesthetics consultant, developing a cohesive brand appeal through interior design, promotional products and digital presence. In her spare time you will find Jessica backpacking, tending her garden and enjoying live jazz.
